Scheduled bodies

What are scheduled bodies?

Scheduled bodies are local government employers, which include:

  • local authorities (county councils, district/borough councils, unitary authorities, metropolitan districts, London boroughs)
  • police and fire authorities (for civilian staff only)
  • coroners
  • academy trusts (covering non-teaching staff)
  • sixth form colleges
  • higher education corporations
  • other bodies listed in part 1 of schedule 2 of the LGPS regulations

Responsibilities

Scheduled bodies must enrol eligible employees into the LGPS. Typically, eligible employees are those who don’t qualify for other public sector pension schemes and meet the necessary criteria.

How to join

Although scheduled bodies don’t undergo a formal joining process, in most cases they already exist. However, there are situations where a new scheduled body may be created. For example, this may happen when LEA schools convert to academy trusts or when local government reorganisation leads to the creation of new local authorities.

Get in touch

It’s important to contact us as soon as possible, before anyone starts employment. This is essential for several reasons. Firstly, we need to set up a funding and contribution plan. Secondly, it allows us to discuss the roles and responsibilities of the new employer. Additionally, we can work together to agree how to manage any legacy issues. Lastly, it gives us the opportunity to address practical matters, like the:

  • payment of pension contributions
  • process for providing monthly membership data.
